Highlights of Your Historical Journey
Ezitouna University – The World’s First Islamic University
Visit the heart of Islamic scholarship in Africa at Ez-Zitouna University, located in the historic medina of Tunis. Founded in 737 CE, with educational activities dating back to the 7th century, Ez-Zitouna predates both Al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco and the University of Bologna in Italy, making it the oldest existing university in the world. It has continuously nurtured generations of scholars, jurists, scientists, and thinkers, playing a central role in shaping Islamic thought across North Africa and beyond.
Sufetula – Site of the First Major Muslim Victory in Africa
Step back in time in the ancient Roman city of Sufetula, today known as Sbeitla, where one of the most pivotal battles in early Islamic history took place. In 647 CE, a small and determined Muslim force led by Abdallah ibn Sa‘d defeated the vastly larger Byzantine army commanded by the exarch Gregory the Patrician. This stunning victory – achieved against overwhelming odds – marked the first major Muslim triumph on African soil and led to the rapid spread of Islam across the Maghreb. The ruins of Sufetula still echo with the legacy of this historic moment, offering visitors a glimpse into the dramatic turning point that changed the course of North African history.
Kairouan – The First Islamic City in North Africa
Founded in 670 CE by Uqba ibn Nafi, Kairouan is considered the spiritual capital of Islam in the Maghreb and the first Islamic city established in North Africa. Revered as one of the holiest cities in Islam after Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem, Kairouan became a flourishing center of religion, science, and culture. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the oldest and most important Islamic monuments in the world, known for its massive minaret and intricate architectural detail. Today, the city’s medina and its iconic mosque are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, attracting visitors from around the globe who come to marvel at their timeless beauty and spiritual significance.
And Many More Historical Cities…
From ancient ruins to spiritual centres, this journey takes you through a curated list of locations deeply tied to the spread of Islam and the rise of Islamic culture in Africa.
